What is a green burial?

A green burial is an environmentally sustainable alternative to standard funeral practices. It is simple and natural. It ensures the burial site remains as natural as possible in all respects. Interment of the body is done in a bio-degradable casket, shroud, or a favorite blanket. Instead of using embalming chemicals to preserve the body, natural processes are allowed to reunite the body with the earth. Essentially, it's the way most of humanity has cared for those who have died for thousands of years up until the late 19th century when embalming and expensive caskets and vaults gained popularity.

Why have a green burial?

More and more families are choosing green burials. Some families identify "simplicity" as the reason they chose a green burial. Others state that they made the choice because it's affordable. And many families say they chose a green burial because it's natural and they wanted to minimize their environmental impact. Whatever the reason for choosing a green burial, Cherished Memories is here to honour the wishes of you and your family in your time of need.

Is embalming required by law?

No. Embalming is only required in rare circumstances, such as transporting the body by airplane.

Where can I be buried?

Unfortunately, large, urban cemeteries frequently require the use of expensive caskets and burial vaults. However, many rural cemeteries -- including several near Saskatoon -- allow green burials. Cherished Memories can provide you with a list of options for green burial locations.
